Got Food?

The summer after I graduated from high school, I decided to go on a mission trip to Honduras. While I was there I had the opportunity to break language barriers and touch lives of children at an orphanage and provide food for people experiencing famine. These humble people forever altered my life. From this experience, I gained my passion for feeding people. My quality of life is called “Got Food?” According to the Census Bureau of 2011, “America has hit the highest number in 52 years of now having 42.6 million people living in poverty.” America is struggling in a recession that is forcing its citizens to choose between their basic necessities such as rent, utilities, medical care, and food each month. When these people are able to buy food, they are limited to what they purchase. Healthy food tends to be more expensive, forcing the purchases of cheaper, unhealthy food. My goal as a lobbyist for Mississippi’s House Bill No. 535 is to stamp out food deserts-areas in our state where fresh fruit and vegetables are not locally available. House Bill 535 would not only help stamp out obesity in our state but also provide an economic benefit to farmers.
